who also gave me this lovely sunny award but after I’d already made the video. (If I’ve missed anyone off, just say – sorry, I lost track a bit)
As I’m a bit late posting this everybody probably has it now, but if you haven’t feel free to grab it and write a sunshine blog post.  Cause we all need a bit of sunshine in our lives.

**Stay tuned for an exciting vlogging announcement coming soon both here and over at Cafe Bebe!  There’s a small clue in my sidebar, hint, hint**

wow, too much snow! how beautiful it all is… could you do another one when the lake defrosts please? it is wonderland, could we also see your hubby cutting an ice hole and fishing??? you have such an unusual lifestyle. Hope you have lots of friends, it looks a long way to those houses across the lake.

  2. themadhouse says:

Wow how much snow. It is lovley to see where you live nad how you live. It is very different from the UK

  3. Dad Who Writes says:

My God, that’s snowy! Looks like you have no neighbours as far as the eye can see.

  4. gappysinglemum says:

Wow, beautiful. Lucky you. Very envious of the cabin/sauna next to the lake.

It’s always so interesting putting a face to a name through peoples vlogs. They always turn out nothing like you pictured them in your head!

  5. Rachel says:

Lovely video, Heather! It is beautiful in the snow and I’m sure it is breathtaking in the summer when you can properly see the lake. One little note that randomly popped in my mind: Perhaps you should avoid the scary movie “The Thing” with Kurt Russell (1982) whilst there is snow on the ground. Your layout looks exactly like the frozen research station in that movie where things go horribly awry!

  6. notesfromlapland says:

when the summer comes i shall do another one and show you the difference – you wont recognise the place, seriously! It is a long way form people and no i don’t have many friends – its the main reason I blog to be honest

  7. notesfromlapland says:

It really is. It’s a different world

  8. notesfromlapland says:

We do have neighbours closer than those across the lake but we still can’t see them. It’s certainly different to the semi i grew up in, thats for sure!

  9. notesfromlapland says:

Oh no, and there i’ve gone and ruined the mystique – you thought i was was tall, leggy, beauty. Damn it!

the sauna is lovely. it where he took me for our second date.

  10. notesfromlapland says:

good to know – will avoid that one. i’m not too good with scary movies anyway. shiver

The summer is gorgeous – absolutely stunning, you wouldn’t recognise the place and you certainly wouldn’t think it was under snow and ice for 6 months of the year!

  11. vegemitevix says:

How naughty of him! I thought you sauna’d au naturale? When are you going to tell us about the first date? Huh? ;-p

  12. vegemitevix says:

Excellent Heather. Nice to see you again, you’re so sunshiney yourself and the farm looks beautiful! x

  13. Karin @ Cafe Bebe says:

Can I come stay in your cabin? ;)
Lovely tour…well done you. Can’t believe you weren’t breathless after all that trudging!
    Karin

  14. themoiderer says:

This is like the blogging version of MTV Cribs isn’t it? good stuff. Very pretty

  15. Jude says:

Fascinating to see such a different lifestyle – just a bit different from Rochdale then! Still, snow or no snow, I know which I’d prefer. It’s amazing where life takes you isn’t it? It makes me feel rather boring and mundane by comparison!

  16. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you lovely! it is nice to be seen. i am starting to realise how lovely vlogs can be to show people things that are a bit unusual.

  17. notesfromlapland says:

Thigh muscles are something you get a lot of in all this snow! lol. you can stay in my cabin any time you like love x

  18. notesfromlapland says:

Except with less bling! lol thank you!

  19. notesfromlapland says:

Life sure has a way of making things interesting. i always knew I wasn’t going to live in the UK though, it was a promise i made myself and went out of my way to visit new places to try and make it happen. and then i met The Man and it did. Yeay!

I still have family around the Rochdale area and have to go back every few years. i’m so glad i don’t live there now.

  20. MrsW says:

I let Paul play the PS3 so I could watch this – how gorgeous is your place? Can’t wait for a summer replay (really I can’t get some paraffin heaters out and melt that stuff…)

  21. notesfromlapland says:

in hind sight it was rather, and we do sauna au naturale!

  22. notesfromlapland says:

I am honoured that you watched it! Really. I would love to melt the damn
stuff away – it’s doing my head in now but the melt is the worst part of the
year. All that water sloshing around and our farm, drive and road are all
dirt – it’s a gooey mud fest for about 4 weeks. Really awful!

  23. peabee72 says:

Just gorgeous, so pretty. I love how snow creates that blanket of silence and calm. D’you know what I enjoyed the most? The sound of your feet crunching through the snow…. so much nicer than the slap slapping of wellies on mud that we’ve got here at the mo!

    Px

  24. Susie says:

OMG-I would be so depressed with only 4 hours of daylight. You guys must also need Vitamin D supplements!

    Beautiful piece of nature though!

  25. Potential Mummy says:

W.O.W! What a stunning place to live.

I love the idea of sparkly air and that cabin looks absolutely amazing!

A lovely vlog, thanks for sharing!

  26. chris mosler says:

Oh I enjoyed this so much! How nice to see you! Beautiful, crunchy, glistening snow but not here…marvellous! Thank you for sharing, I can almost smell that clear air!

  27. dotterel says:

Hmmm, hope the neighbours are friendly…. fancy having them as close as that!

Seriously, love the ‘crunch-crunch’ snow soundtrack. Love the video, too.

  28. supersinglemum says:

Wow what an amazingly tranquil environment o bring up kids! I don’t think I could live that far away from people but it is soooo pretty, can’t wait to see the defrostd lake!!! Thanksfor sharing!

  29. Make do mum says:

It looks stunning with all that twinkly snow. And what I’d give for that peace and quiet. Any chance of opening a Mummys retreat?!

  30. noblesavage says:

Beautiful place you’ve got there. Really breathtaking. I used to live on a vast, 360-acre farm so I know that feeling of isolation. It’s both delicious and lonely, at the same time. Thanks for the tour!

  31. Erin McDowell Lee says:

Lovely vlog! I’m jealous of the snow and the cabin – I wish I could be enjoying the snow at my family’s cabin in Oregon right now.

One thing, who is Erica and what is she doing at my blog?

    =) Erin

  32. diney says:

I think something wrong with my speakers so I had a silent tour round your place which added to the atmosphere! Now I can see for myself why you enjoy blogging so much!! It looks so peaceful (oh! that was because there was no sound)..seriously, lovely place to be.

  33. its a mummyslife says:

How lovely to ‘meet’ you. Love your “quite a bit of snow” comment. There’s masses!!!

  34. notesfromlapland says:

oh definitely, I hate that sludgy slurping noise that you get with mud and wellies. we get far too much mud in the spring when all the snow melts. i hate that time of year.

  35. notesfromlapland says:

We have to give the kids vitamin D supplements all year round here until they are 3 to stop the getting rickets! in the summer though we have 24 hour day light – the sun never sets!

  36. notesfromlapland says:

thank you1 the sparkly air is really weird at first but really lovely.

  37. notesfromlapland says:

oh i am so glad you enjoyed it! It’s a shame there’s no such thing as smellivision to let you experience it. you’ll all just have to come and visit!

  38. notesfromlapland says:

I know, it’s a nightmare living on top of each other like that, and they’re so noisy!

    thanks Tim. :)

  39. notesfromlapland says:

it really is wonderful for the kids – so safe and clean and so much to explore. It is very isolated though. this is why i blog.

  40. notesfromlapland says:

    that’s not a bed idea…

  41. notesfromlapland says:

You are welcome, it was nice to do, I kind of feel like you’ve all been to visit now. the isolation is a double edged sword isn’t it?

  42. notesfromlapland says:

Oh damn it – that Erica, she get’s everywhere *blush* sorry! i’m so crap. will change it.

  43. notesfromlapland says:

it’s funny but even with the volume on all you can hear is me talking and the crunch of my footsteps. there really is no noise out here. It’s wonderful.

  44. notesfromlapland says:

Having lived here for 5 years now I really forget how snowy and different it all is and how to most people this is loads of snow. It has actually snowed again three times since I made this and we have a lot more now.

  45. Dara says:

I haven’t been able to watch the whole thing yet because – as discussed in your post on vlogging – the kids keep coming over to see what Mommy is watching and asking a gazillion questions.
It looks beautiful though. We get more sunlight here than you – in December we have about 7 – 8 hours a day (around 9 am – 4:30pm). But was also get more snow. I was expecting it to be a lot snowier there!

I know how you feel about the melt. Ack. WE have a sump-pump in the house to keep the basement from flooding and it runs non-stop from mid-April to mid-May. Drives me batty because I want to be out breaking up the ground for the gardens and such but it’s so darn muddy and I’ve more than once fallen on my ass in the muck.

Your dogs are beauts. Our youngest is allergic so we had to give away our pets. Your “rabbit hunter” looks a lot like a beagle, which are also rabbit hunters, imagine they are much the same.

If I had that cabin it would be my sex cabin. My husband and I fatasize about hiring a babysitter for a half-hour and going out in the garage – the cabin would be even better!

So beautiful, you’ve made my “barnheart” worse, you know.

I pictured you as a blond for some reason. Perhaps cause every other Heather I know is a blond. Other than that you’re much as I pictured. So that’s neat.

  46. Chic Mama says:

Really enjoyed that Heather, looks beautiful. I thought we lived in the middle of nowhere but nothing compared to you. Would love to know more, how far you have to go to the shops etc…can you speak the language etc…I’m being nosy but would love to know. ;0) x

  47. Josie says:

Amazing. Like another world to my hum-drum life here. Can’t get over how different our lives are.

Now harbouring a very real fantasy that I am going to run away and live in your cabin.

I’m serious, if you see smoke coming from that chimney, it’s me.

I have my tea black with two sugars x

  48. notesfromlapland says:

darn those kids, eh? Yeah, the lack of day light can be a real pain but the 24 hours of it in the summer is awesome! We have a similar pump that we have to use in the barn to stop the horses drowning!
and yeah that mud sucks, doesn’t it?

The sad thing is that even with the cabin we dont use it often – although we have been known to and the baby monitor works down there so we don’t even need a baby sitter once they are asleep…

Nope definitely not a blonde, although there is a silly picture of me in a blonde wig somewhere – i think it’s in my silly pictures slideshow (theres a link to my slideshows in the sidebar)

  49. notesfromlapland says:

So glad you enjoyed it1 We aren’t too far from the the nearest shop – we are very lucky that we have one on our village, it’s about a mile, mile and a half to the shop. I do speak Finnish but not brilliantly. Our village is mostly populated by older people who don’t speak English so i really had to learn, plus the kids are native Finnish speakers and i want to know what they are plotting.

  50. notesfromlapland says:

you are welcome to come and visit us any time you wish, either with family or as a writing retreat without. Really.

  51. bbonini says:

I’ve never seen a vlog before! Wonderful tour, and you have a lovely voice. Euphonious, even.

I do think you are brave living in a place that only gets 4 hours of daylight in December. And I thought England was bad . . . although we don’t have any sunshine today (or any day in recent memory, actually).

  52. Jen says:

I know the snow is probably very annoying for you, but it looks amazing in the video:) I am a country girl at heart and watching that clip has made me yearn for it! Jen.

  53. Vic says:

Your place is beautiful! Bet you get sick of the snow though.
Now, wonder if the husband could install me a cabin and sauna in the back garden?

  54. Emma says:

Oh Heather , It’s so beautiful! I’ll be on the next flight out to come & stay in that cabin of yours.
I do look forward to a summer tour! :)
The dogs are soooo cute! Such a fantastic Vlog!! xx

  55. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you1 i am so pleased you liked it! It wasn’t planned, my moving here and if someone had told me about the lack of sunlight i might never have even got on the plane. so glad i did though, wouldn’t change it for the world. Well, maybe just a couple of those winter months somewhere nice and sunny would be nice…

  56. notesfromlapland says:

I couldn’t live in a city again, I don’t think. I’ve always been a country girl at heart and love the open space and peace.

  57. notesfromlapland says:

A sauna in the garden sounds lovely…

  58. notesfromlapland says:

Wouldn’t it be great if the flights weren’t so expensive and then you could all come and visit! It does get rather lonely at times, would be lovely to have some guests.

  59. Foodie Mummy says:

I can’t see it! It won’t load for me!

  60. ljrich says:

What an absolutely beautiful place! I am totally obsessed with Finland, and I would give my right arm to come live there. Sadly, my husband doesn’t share my zest for Finnish countryside. lol I respectfully request more vlogs of where you live! I shamelessly admit to living vicariously through your camera.:)

  61. nicolacmp says:

So fantastic to get an insight into where you live. It’s chucking it down with snow right now in Chicago – but it’s not as pretty in my neighbourhood that’s for sure. Maybe I should vlog from the lake – the ice formations we get are outstanding. I visited Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago for a weekend with friends, at their house on a lake, and it was so similar. We walked on the frozen lake and watched the ice fisherman. I can’t wait to go back because it is so peaceful. I really miss being out in the middle of nowhere. I am not sure I could handle that isolation full time though – I really admire you and am quite envious that it works so well for your family. I think my boys would absolutely love it.

  62. notesfromlapland says:

oh noes! thats terrible! I hope it works later for you, it was especially
    for you and everything!

  63. notesfromlapland says:

ha ha, i shall make some more, i promise!

  64. notesfromlapland says:

the vlogging from the lake sounds amazing! and yeah, the isolation can be
too much at times but it’s what we’re stuck with so just have to kind of get
on with it, you know? It’s brilliant for kids to be so free.

  65. johnomori says:

And here I thought ice fishing was purely something that took place in Minnesota. How provincial we Americans are.

  66. notesfromlapland says:

    ha ha, indeed! ;)

  67. vwallop says:

Absolutely gorgeous, I’m jealous now! Crunch crunch crunch…

  68. aliceharold says:

Wow, it’s absolutely beautiful out there! Loved this vid :)

  69. North West London Girl says:

What a wonderful looking place, I now realise our snow is pretty feeble in comparison and all us moaning Brits need to just zip up now x

  70. Susan Mann says:

Wow, your place is absolutely gorgeous. Can I come live there? I love the snow and the cold. Your video is great, well done. Can’t wait to see more. xx

  71. Caroline says:

Loved your tour, Heather, and also your comments re vlogging have given me some food for thought – really interesting, and something I’m going to start thinking about doing soon, I think. Your home is fabulous, btw! Caroline x

  72. BNM says:

I have decided that I’m going to come and live in your cabin on my one for some peace and quiet . I know there’s a word for doing that without your knowledge, illegally, but I have been up since 6 and fifi forget me not – I’ve forgot the word.
    BNMx

  73. Mwa says:

    Lovely! Amazing!

(I’m intrigued by what lives in the barn.)

  74. Sharon Fried-Jones says:

Wow! Beautiful. Fancy swapping for surburban London?

  75. IotaM says:

You look like I imagined! That never happens.

I loved “it’s quite a snowy, wintery road”. Gotta love understatement.

Wow, you’re so isolated. No wonder you blog!

    I really enjoyed watching this.

  76. Almost American says:

What a great tour – thanks! You DID manage to capture the sparkly snow! It actually looks a little like some places in New England (tho they don’t usually have the cabins with saunas!) They do ice fishing here too and I’ve always thought of it as a thoroughly American thing.

  77. Sandy Calico says:

My children are still convinced that I am you! Gorgeous place you’ve got there. Love the crunchy sound effects! ;-)

  78. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you! i didn’t realise how loud that crunching was until i watched it back!

  79. notesfromlapland says:

thank you! it is gorgeous. cold though!

  80. notesfromlapland says:

ha ha, i did laugh a lot when the big snow fall in the UK was on TV here and all the schools were closed!

  81. notesfromlapland says:

sure, why not? come on out!

  82. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you. Looking forward to seeing some vlogs!

  83. notesfromlapland says:

Squatting? You are going to become my cabin squatter? sounds quite rude, doesn’t it? You’re quite welcome, it does get a bit chilly down there – no electric, or running water oh and toilet is an outside long drop. but apart form that it’s divine!

  84. notesfromlapland says:

Horses and a goat. Perhaps they will be introduced to you all soon.

  85. notesfromlapland says:

errr, no. thanks and all but i much prefer it here. Wouldn’t mind the odd weekend in London though.

  86. notesfromlapland says:

Exactly, this is why i blog so much! Life is rather quite and lacking in people!

  87. notesfromlapland says:

Ice fishing is huge here – both the sort where they drill the small hole and catch fish one by one and the kind like my husband does with huge chain saws and big nets. I find the small hole fishing incredibly dull.

  88. notesfromlapland says:

Don’t be getting any ideas about coming to visit and then ‘accidentally’ leaving them behind with ‘mummy’!

  89. MissSearles says:

    I saw no Reindeer…..just saying….

  90. Nickie @ Typecast says:

It’s a lovely place :D but it’s far to quiet for me!! I’d go stir crazy over there with all that silence!! You didn’t show us the potato hole!!

  91. If I Could Escape says:

How gorgeous is all that snow! Loved this vlog and can’t wait to see what you and Cafe Bebe are cooking up!

  92. DogsMom says:

Thank you so much for the tour. I am snowed in on a Wisconsin farm now, and hours and hours of sunlight sound like a dream. Thinking like a farmer we do need the white stuff, but you are right, then comes the mud. Yuk. Looking forward to seeing more and loving the discussion in your comments section.
Oh- and here we do motorcycle races on the ice. Well, not “we” – I am crazy but not suicidal.

  93. nonlineargirl says:

How great! Will you do it again in summer so we can see what things look like without all the snow?

  94. notesfromlapland says:

You and your bloody reindeer obsession :P you’ll get to see loads of the when you come and live out here…or mabe I can track some down for you somewhere and video them…

  95. notesfromlapland says:

I didn’t! Maybe the next time I have to go potato gathering I show you.

  96. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you! and it is good, i promise you. All will be revealed on Monday!

  97. notesfromlapland says:

Motorcycle races sounds like fun. To watch. Glad you enjoyed the tour :)

  98. notesfromlapland says:

I will, i will! then you can see beautiful it is when green!

  99. BNM says:

Yes Cabin squatter! It does sound very rude but I think the peace would be lovely

I live in Wales so coldness is not an issue – when everyone else have sun we get rain!

    BNMx

  100. notesfromlapland says:

    cool, come on over then!

  101. Crystal Jigsaw says:

Yes, please do another when lake has defrosted. Fantastic tour, you know me, I love farms and it was great to see yours.

    CJ xx

  102. notesfromlapland says:

oh thank you! I will definitely do another once it’s all melted. it’s so
    pretty here in the summer!

  103. notesfromlapland says:

Sure, why not? the more the merrier!

  104. notesfromlapland says:

I was laughing loud and hard watching sky news a few weeks back when all the
roads and schools were closed in the UK!

  105. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you! It is gorgeous. cold, mind.

  106. notesfromlapland says:

Thank you! i didn’t realise until i watched it back how loud the crunching
    was going to be!

  107. Hannah Gray says:

What a pretty place to live (if you like snow …) – thank you for showing us (very through the keyhole !)

  108. notesfromlapland says:

    ha ha, thank you!

  109. Laura says:

Lovely to see you and your home! … and yes, a lot better than Rochdale!

  110. notesfromlapland says:

Most things are in my experience ;) Thank you!

  111. vwallop says:

I love that crunching sound! And I meant to ask, do you ever skate on the lake? I’ve never skated on a real lake before but am reading one of my childhood favourites, Arthur Ransome’s Winter Holiday, to Evie and have always loved the idea of proper skating.

  112. notesfromlapland says:

never. Some people do but the window between it freezing up and getting
covered in snow is so small! Some places they clear the snow away and do it
    - couldn’t be bothered with all that quite frankly. am lazy.

  113. letempsjadis says:

Thanks for the vlog. I loved watching it. I visited Norrbotten (Sweden) many times in the past, though never in the winter. Your video reminds me of the area.
    Have a nice weekend!

  114. notesfromlapland says:

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’ve never been to Sweden but I believe that the
    two countries look quite similar.
